Under Construction: New Alden Yachts 53 Motor Yacht Date: April 15, 2003 Currently under construction with an expected delivery in June of 03 is Katie D, the first 53' motor yacht built and launched by Alden Yachts. The inspiration for the 53 began with the "standard" design for the 50 motor yacht. The owners wished to expand the aft deckhouse area to provide the space necessary for a larger tender on deck while at the same time creating a roomier aft master stateroom. "The owners didn't wish to get into a 56 foot plus hull. We were able to meet our design objectives in a 53 foot design that provided the required space while maintaining an elegant and well balanced profile," stated David MacFarlane, president of Alden Yachts. The arrangement of the aft master cabin takes full advantage of the extra three feet of length gained by the cabin house extension. A queen size island berth sits just starboard of centerline. Adjacent to the master berth, to port and starboard, are located nightstands with a drawer and locker. A full desk, which would rival any found in a home office, is located to port of the berth. Directly overhead, a large hatch provides ample light and ventilation. Two hanging lockers, a chest of drawers, and a bookshelf complete the aft cabin arrangement. There is also an en suite head to port complete with a separate shower stall. The companionway stairs up to the main saloon also open to provide additional storage space. Forward of the master stateroom is the main saloon, and Katie D's main saloon lives up to the standard of excellence by which all Alden Yachts are built. Finished in cherry, as is the entire interior, the main saloon feels light and roomy with eight large side windows, one aft, and three large windshields. A teak and holly cabin sole, raised panel doors and varnished cherry ceiling battens also appear throughout the yacht. A large entertainment center on the port side will house the home theater system wired for the entire yacht. A custom sofa will be installed to starboard across from the entertainment center. A cherry dinette table with holly inlet "converts" the seating to a dining area. At the forward end of the main saloon on the port side is a breakfast bar with two stools. Overlooking the galley and facing out the windshields, the breakfast bar is the perfect place to sit and enjoy a quick meal. To starboard of the breakfast bar is Katie D's lower helm station. A bookcase has been installed just aft of the helm station to help separate the helm area from the rest of the saloon. Down
the forward companionway steps to port is the galley. Corian countertops
complement the modern appliances and the classic style of the woodwork.
Several lockers and drawers give the galley a homey look and function
not found in most yachts of this size. To starboard of the galley is
the guest head. Unique to Katie D is the inclusion of a full
size bathtub. Head and shower surfaces are finished in white laminate
to provide a bright interior as well as ease of cleaning. As a nice
accent, an ultra-gloss wood countertop with under-hung sink has been
installed on the vanity. The forward guest cabin features two single berths arranged in an upper and lower configuration to port. Two drawers beneath the lower berth, a locker over the foot of the upper berth, and a hanging locker to starboard create a lot of space for guests and their gear. A two-seat settee to starboard fills out the cabin nicely. Above, Katie D's deck is strong and spacious, featuring the thoughtfully planned equipment that Alden Yachts has become known for. For washing down the deck and anchor rode, Alden Yachts has installed a high-pressure saltwater wash-down system recessed into the forward end of the deck. A flush mounted anchor locker hatch gives the owner easy access to the anchor locker at any time. Three large hatches and 14 portlights provide the interior of the boat with plenty of fresh air and natural light. Eleven hawse pipes, including a transom centerline hawse with integral cleat, have been installed to provide for a variety of docking arrangements. Instead of lifeline handrails on the port and starboard sides, Katie D has been equipped with full-length stainless steel rails with port and starboard gates. The spacious cockpit has been fitted with a hot and cold water shower and a fresh water spigot concealed in a side locker. Teak sole covers the cockpit, and twin, piston-assisted, hatches provide convenient access to the lazaret. Alden Yachts' standard Non-Skid finish will be applied to the walking and working areas of the deck and swim platform. The swim platform also includes two pop-up cleats to help with docking. The extended aft cabin accommodates the owner's 12-foot hard-bottom dinghy. An electric davit with a hand-held remote has been installed on the port side of the aft cabin house to launch and retrieve the dinghy. Twin Caterpillar 3196, 660hp diesels are located in Katie D's spacious and well lit engine room. Electronic engine controls and a 15hp digitally controlled bowthruster provide easy handling around the docks. The large flybridge comes complete with a full Strataglass enclosure and a hardtop to protect the pilot in all conditions. Twin Pompanette seats and two settees provide ample seating space for the owner and his guests. An overhead hatch in the hardtop provides the owner with access to the electronics on the mast while it is in the raised position. A finely finished table that rotates and slides to accommodate several configurations creates a comfortable atmosphere in which to sit, relax, and enjoy a snack or meal while underway. Alden Yachts' standard exterior finish is the Awl Grip paint system creating a long-lasting, high-gloss finish on the hull in a variety of colors. A traditional Flag Blue has been selected for Katie D with a white boot stripe and red bottom. The hull comes with Alden Yachts' standard 10-year warranty against osmotic blistering. The new 53 Motor Yacht presents a very functional interior, beautifully finished in a sea-proven hull with a distinctly handsome exterior profile exquisitely executed by Alden Yachts.
