Under Construction: New Alden Yachts 56 Hardtop Express Date: July 31, 2002 Currently under construction at Alden Yachts is the 56' Hardtop Express "Mohican". With delivery this summer, "Mohican" represents the latest and one of the most impressive power boats Alden Yachts has built to date. The vacuum-bagged hull laminate will incorporate an outer skin of vinylester barrier resin with balsa core. The inner skins of the hull consist of a stitched unidirectional and bidirectional FRP. A lateral and transverse beam stringer system is used to fortify the hull and to support the boat's structures and engines. Alden Yachts' standard exterior finish is the Awl Grip® paint system creating a long-lasting, high-gloss finish on the hull. The hull comes with Alden Yachts' 10-year warranty against osmotic blistering. The hardtop is autoclave cured, vacuum bag molded with epoxy resin construction, providing strength while reducing weight on top. One of the more striking design elements of the boat is the overhead treatment, finished in white, and accented by wood box beams. This gives the boat a classic feel of the great yachts of the past and also provides a nice contrast to the wood bulkheads and furniture -- finished in mahogany in the lower saloon and teak in the upper bridge deck. The forward owner's cabin, spanning the bow of the yacht, is large and well lighted. The centerline island berth, a 6'8" long queen-sized bed accessible from either side, has a chest of full extension 30" drawers beneath it with nightstands located on both sides. Overhead side cabinets, forward and aft cabinets and a central bookshelf complement the chest of drawers beneath the berth to create a great deal of storage for the owners and their gear. An en suite head with a Scandvik shower is located to starboard. Custom "Smedbo-Villa" chromed solid brass hardware is used in heads and stateroom. The head is finished in mahogany, an elegant touch, in lieu of the standard finishes typically found on yachts. Countertops are finished in high gloss with an underhung mirror finished stainless steel sink. Cabinet interior finishes are high impact laminate, as is the shower stall, for ease of cleaning and durability. Just aft of the forward owner's cabin to port is a large U-settee finished in Spinnybeck leather. To starboard is a recessed alcove with lower double cabinets and double drawers to house an extensive entertainment center, including a large flat screen television, DVD player, VCR and a Linn stereo system. By removing and stowing the dinette table into a custom compartment in the galley, a very comfortable and open sitting area is created to enjoy the state-of-the-art entertainment system. The galley is located to port, just aft of the settee -- full size with all the conveniences of home including refrigerator/freezer with icemaker, trash compactor, dishwasher, microwave, Gaggenau stove and oven, and Grohe fixtures. Above, a sliding hatch spans the full length of the galley, providing a wonderful open air setting for cooking. The centerline companionway stairs, finished in mahogany, lift with the push of a button to reveal an Equator washer/dryer unit. Opposite of the galley to starboard is the guest stateroom, fitted with twin single berths, lockers and bureaus. An en suite head, finished in mahogany, is accessible forward of the guest stateroom. A solid door leads to the shower stall. The companionway leads aft to the bridge deck, a wonderful example of understated elegance -- Alden Yachts' emphasis on fine craftsmanship is evident from the beautifully finished bulkheads to the flawless joinery work. Unlike the lower saloon, the entire bridge deck is finished in teak. To port, a dinette seating area is built upon a slightly raised platform to provide excellent views while at anchorage. The platform also provides a custom storage drawer to stow the companionway door. The dinette table is made of mahogany, a nice device to tie in with the lower saloon's finish, with teak trim and an inlaid compass rose of teak and ash. To starboard, a quite impressive helm console provides both functionality and elegance. Constructed of teak, the console houses twin LCD screens which integrate the electronic gear --GPS, radar, fish finder and autopilot. Mathers controls provide the helmsman with a light touch on the twin 6062 825 HP Detroit Diesels, and a 10HP Sidepower bow thruster controlled by a joystick control pad adds ease of handling in and around the docks. Aft
of the dinette to port is a gently curved settee finished in leather,
as is the dinette seating and helm seat. A hinged backrest on the settee
provides storage for the removable Stratoglass windows which enclose
the aft end of the bridge deck. The bridge deck seating area is completed
with two freestanding barrel chairs, finished in Ralph Lauren fabric,
and positioned opposite the settee to starboard. Equally impressive is the look of the boat from the outside. "Mohican" will be the first Alden Yachts motor yacht to sport teak side decks, cockpit and swim platform. Accented by the high gloss finished teak toe rails, the effect is quite stunning. The cockpit includes a remote for the Mathers controls and bow thruster, making maneuvering the boat from the cockpit quite simple. By lifting the cockpit lazarette (via an electric actuator), a Gageneau grill mounted in a Corian top is revealed. The transom door is flush with the deck and leads to an oversized swim platform for mounting the dinghy, an Aqua Scanjet, which can be deployed from the cockpit by remote control. In
"Mohican", Alden Yachts has created a remarkable blend of
modern amenities and aesthetic subtleties found on the classic yachts
of the past. She will long be a yacht her owners can take pride in for
both her beauty and performance. For more information contact Alden Yachts at 401.683.4200 or email at pressrelease@aldenyachts.com |
