Christening ceremony for Tonic, Alden Yachts first 44' Flybridge Express Date: May 1, 2002 On Friday, April 5th, almost one year after construction began on Chip duPont's custom 44 foot flybridge express by Alden Yachts, family and friends gathered together in Portsmouth, Rhode Island for the christening of Tonic. More than 100 people attended the celebration, which included a traditional champagne christening with a new twist: two bottles of champagne broken upon the bow. The dual honors were performed by Chip's daughters Heidi and Jamie duPont. Presiding over the ceremony was David MacFarlane, President of Alden Yachts. As is the case with each new boat launched, the Alden Yachts production staff -- laminators, woodworkers, mechanics, engineers, everyone involved in the building of the yacht -- was on hand to share in the festivities. "The owner works with the entire staff from day one in the building process. There is a special relationship that forms through this process, and the christening has become a very proud moment not only for the owner, but for the entire staff," noted David MacFarlane. Gifts were exchanged between staff and the new owners; custom shirts sporting Tonic's name and profile as well as a thoughtfully catered spread were provided by the duPonts; and a half model of Tonic was presented by David Macfarlane to Chip duPont along with a much bigger prize, Tonic. In thanking the staff, Chip stated, "Building this boat has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life". He went on to say that he was "continuously impressed with the responsiveness and quality craftsmanship Alden Yachts provided to the project." The
44 foot-long yacht is the first in the Alden Yachts 40-44-46 Express
series to have a flybridge and enclosed saloon, creating a much-anticipated
launch. With her classic New England lines, trademark Alden Yachts craftsmanship,
and state-of-the-art electronics, the duPonts will long have a yacht
to be proud of.
